Data center failover test — East Coast facility results
Team,
The scheduled failover test for our East Coast facility completed at 06:45 UTC this morning. I'm pleased to report that all primary services transferred to the secondary infrastructure within the target window. Below is a summary of the results.
Test Parameters
- Simulated failure: Complete power loss at primary facility
- Failover target: Secondary facility (Ashburn, VA)
- RTO target: 120 seconds
- RPO target: Zero data loss
Results
- Mail delivery failover: 47 seconds (target met)
- IMAP service restoration: 62 seconds (target met)
- WebMail interface: 85 seconds (target met)
- Data integrity check: Zero message loss confirmed
- DNS propagation: Completed within 90 seconds via anycast
One observation worth noting: during the IMAP failover, we saw a brief spike in connection retry traffic from clients with aggressive reconnect intervals. This didn't impact service availability but did create a load spike on the secondary facility's load balancers. I've included a detailed analysis in the attached report along with recommendations for client-side connection backoff tuning.
The full test report, including logs and monitoring dashboards, is attached. I recommend we schedule the West Coast facility test for the week of March 24.
